SoftBank-owned ARM, the ubiquitous chip designer behind the processors in most smartphones, is set to shake up the artificial intelligence (AI) hardware market with plans to launch its own AI chips by   2025. This move signifies ARM’s ambition to expand beyond its core licensing business and become a major player in the fast-growing AI chip sector.

According to a report by Nikkei Asia, ARM will establish a dedicated AI chip division tasked with developing the new hardware. The aggressive timeline suggests a focus on rapid prototyping, with the goal of having a functional prototype ready by spring 2025. Mass production is then expected to kick off by fall of the same year, with ARM outsourcing manufacturing to established contract chipmakers like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (TSMC).

The significant upfront costs associated with chip development, potentially running into the hundreds of billions of yen, will be shouldered by both ARM and its parent company, SoftBank. This financial commitment underscores the importance ARM places on this new venture.

The report further suggests that upon establishing a stable mass-production system, SoftBank might even spin off the AI chip business as a separate entity. This strategic move could allow for more focused management and potentially attract further investment in the new venture.

ARM’s foray into AI chips comes at a time when demand for specialised AI hardware is surging. The ever-increasing complexity of AI models necessitates processors specifically designed to handle the intensive workloads involved in tasks like machine learning and deep learning. Traditional CPUs, while powerful, are not optimised for these tasks, leading to inefficiencies and higher power consumption.

This has opened doors for companies like Nvidia, which have carved a niche in the AI chip market with their Tensor Core GPUs. ARM’s entry into this space could disrupt the current landscape, leveraging their extensive industry partnerships and established chip architecture to offer competitive solutions.

Analysts believe ARM’s existing relationships with chip manufacturers like TSMC could be a significant advantage. Securing production capacity early on is crucial in the competitive chip market, and ARM’s established connections could prove invaluable in this regard. Additionally, ARM’s vast ecosystem of licensees could provide a ready market for their AI chips, potentially accelerating adoption.

However, ARM faces stiff competition from entrenched players like Nvidia and emerging challengers like Intel and AMD, all of which are also heavily invested in developing next-generation AI hardware. The success of ARM’s AI chips will hinge on their ability to offer superior performance, power efficiency, and cost-effectiveness compared to the existing solutions.

Furthermore, the AI chip landscape is constantly evolving. ARM will need to demonstrate agility and a commitment to continuous innovation to stay ahead of the curve. This might involve exploring partnerships with other AI software and hardware companies to create a more comprehensive AI ecosystem.

ARM’s decision to enter the AI chip market is a bold move with the potential to significantly alter the competitive landscape. The company’s established industry presence, combined with its aggressive development timeline, suggests a serious commitment to becoming a major player in this critical sector.

The next few years will be crucial as ARM navigates the technical and business challenges involved in bringing its AI chip vision to fruition. The outcome will not only impact ARM’s future but could also shape the trajectory of the AI hardware landscape as a whole.
