A recent study by ShopFully sheds light on Australian consumer shopping preferences, revealing a fascinating dichotomy. While a significant portion of the population has embraced the convenience of click-and-collect, the allure of in-store shopping remains strong.
The survey, which polled 1,000 Australians, found that a compelling 90% of respondents prefer to shop in brick-and-mortar stores. This preference can likely be attributed to the inherent advantages of physical retail. The ability to touch, feel, and examine products firsthand offers a level of engagement simply unmatched by online shopping. Additionally, the in-store experience can be a source of enjoyment for many consumers. The act of browsing through aisles, discovering new items, and interacting with salespeople can be intrinsically rewarding.
However, the study also highlights the growing popularity of click-and-collect services. Roughly 70% of Australians reported using click-and-collect when shopping online. This method offers an attractive middle ground, blending the convenience of online browsing with the immediacy of in-store pickup. Shoppers can avoid the wait times associated with home delivery while still benefiting from the efficiency of online purchasing.
Significantly, the research indicates that click-and-collect can serve as a powerful tool for retailers to drive in-store traffic and boost sales. According to Brendan Straw, ShopFully Country Manager for Australia, “Since the inception of click and collect, it’s been a powerful tool for retailers, as it incentivises customers to visit a business location in person, providing the optimal opportunity for a second purchase to be made.”
This is supported by the finding that 78% of those who utilise click-and-collect will often browse and potentially purchase additional items while in-store. This impulse buying behaviour translates to a significant potential revenue stream for retailers who have capitalised on click-and-collect services.
The study also explores the motivations behind consumer preference for in-store shopping. Interestingly, the enjoyment of the shopping experience itself ranked second highest, with 34% of respondents citing it as a key factor. This highlights the importance of creating a positive and engaging in-store environment for retailers. Well-trained staff, attractive product displays, and a focus on customer service can all contribute to a more enjoyable shopping experience, potentially swaying consumers who might otherwise opt for online channels.
While the findings paint a clear picture of Australians’ enduring love for physical retail, they also acknowledge the undeniable rise of click-and-collect. Retailers who can effectively bridge the gap between these two preferences by offering a seamless omni-channel experience are likely to find themselves well-positioned for success in the ever-evolving retail landscape. This means ensuring a user-friendly online shopping experience with efficient click-and-collect options, while simultaneously cultivating a welcoming and enjoyable in-store environment.
The continued popularity of in-store shopping underscores the inherent human desire for a physical connection with the products we purchase. Click-and-collect, on the other hand, offers a solution for time-conscious consumers who value convenience without sacrificing the ability to retrieve their purchases promptly. As retail continues to evolve, the ability to cater to both sets of preferences will be paramount for Australian businesses seeking to thrive in this dynamic market.
