Belgian big data solutions provider Gorilla for the energy sector have just announced they have successful closed a €25 million Series A funding round. The investment, led by sustainability-focused venture capital firm Planet B, will fuel Gorilla’s continued expansion and product development endeavours.

Gorilla’s software platform aids energy providers in navigating the complexities of big data by offering a suite of data management, analytics, and visualisation tools. The company’s technology ingests vast amounts of data from various sources, including smart meters, grid infrastructure, and weather forecasting models. This data is then cleansed, normalised, and analysed to generate actionable insights that can optimise energy production, distribution, and customer service.

“The energy sector is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by the rise of renewable energy sources, decentralised generation, and the increasing importance of energy efficiency,” said Michiel Van Beveren, CEO and co-founder of Gorilla. “Our platform empowers energy providers to leverage the power of big data to make data-driven decisions that can improve their operational efficiency, reduce costs, and ultimately, contribute to a more sustainable energy future.”

Gorilla’s Technology Addresses Key Challenges in the Energy Sector

The energy sector faces several challenges in the modern era. The increasing adoption of renewable energy sources like solar and wind power introduces variability into the grid, making it more difficult to balance supply and demand. Additionally, the rise of distributed generation, where energy is produced closer to the point of consumption, further complicates grid management.

Gorilla’s platform addresses these challenges by providing energy providers with the tools they need to:

  • Improve forecasting accuracy: By analysing historical data alongside real-time weather information, Gorilla’s platform can generate more accurate forecasts of energy demand and production. This allows energy providers to optimise their grid operations and minimise the need for expensive reserve generation.
  • Optimise grid management: The platform’s data visualisation tools provide real-time insights into grid conditions, allowing energy providers to identify and address potential problems before they occur. This can help to improve grid reliability and reduce the frequency and duration of outages.
  • Enhance customer service: By leveraging customer data, Gorilla’s platform can help energy providers identify customer usage patterns and develop targeted marketing campaigns and energy efficiency programs. This can lead to increased customer satisfaction and loyalty.

Planet B Leads Investment Round, Highlighting Sustainability Focus

The funding round was led by Planet B, a venture capital firm specialising in investments that address the climate crisis. This investment underscores Gorilla’s commitment to sustainability and its role in enabling the transition to a clean energy future.

“We are excited to partner with Gorilla as they empower energy providers to leverage big data for a more sustainable energy future,” said Peter Van Beek, Managing Partner at Planet B. “Gorilla’s platform has the potential to significantly improve the efficiency and sustainability of the energy sector, and we believe the company is well-positioned to play a leading role in the global energy transition.”

Gorilla Poised for Continued Growth

With this new funding, Gorilla is well-positioned to continue its growth trajectory. The company plans to invest in product development, expand its sales and marketing efforts, and grow its international presence. Gorilla’s innovative technology has the potential to revolutionise the way energy providers manage their operations and contribute to a more sustainable energy future.
