Sustainable Metal Cloud (SMC), a frontrunner in sustainable cloud computing solutions, has achieved a significant breakthrough in artificial intelligence (AI) efficiency. This press release details the company’s accomplishment, highlighting its utilisation of novel cooling technology to propel AI performance while minimising environmental impact.
The core of SMC’s success lies in its implementation of immersion cooling, a technique pioneered by technology partner Firmus Technologies. This method submerges computer hardware in a specially formulated non-conductive liquid coolant. Compared to traditional air-cooling systems, immersion cooling offers superior heat transfer capabilities. This allows for significantly higher operating temperatures for hardware, leading to several key advantages.
One of the most notable benefits is a substantial reduction in energy consumption. According to the press release, SMC’s AI platform, powered by immersion cooling, achieved a remarkable 50% reduction in energy usage. This translates to significant cost savings for both SMC and its customers, while also contributing to a smaller carbon footprint for AI development and deployment.
The performance gains associated with immersion cooling are equally impressive. The press release states that SMC’s cloud training environment, when utilising the enhanced VBOOST-enabled software stack in conjunction with immersion cooling, achieved a 7% performance improvement while simultaneously lowering energy consumption to 451kWh. These results position SMC’s offering within striking distance of industry leader NVIDIA’s flagship Eos AI supercomputer, with a performance gap of only 6%. It is important to note that this specific benchmark has not yet been independently verified by the MLCommons Association.
SMC’s commitment extends beyond achieving industry-leading efficiency for its own platform. The company is actively involved in the MLCommons organisation, a consortium dedicated to establishing performance benchmarks and best practices for machine learning. This involvement underscores SMC’s dedication to not only developing cutting-edge technology but also fostering transparency and collaboration within the AI industry.
A core tenet of SMC’s mission is the democratisation of AI technology. By minimising the environmental impact of AI development and offering cost-effective solutions, SMC aims to make this powerful technology more accessible to a wider range of organisations. This aligns perfectly with the growing demand for sustainable and responsible AI practices.
“Our commitment to sustainability aims not only at achieving industry-leading efficiency but also at making sustainable AI accessible,” SMC emphasises in the press release. “By minimising the environmental impact and delivering cost savings, the company strives to democratise AI technology.”
Looking ahead, SMC remains dedicated to supporting the development of advanced AI models and promoting the broader adoption of energy-efficient AI technologies. The company’s achievements represent a significant step forward in the ongoing quest to make AI a more sustainable and accessible tool for progress.
