A recent industry report by Bloomberg NEF titled “New Energy Outlook 2024” outlined a new energy and climate scenario for the transition to a low-carbon economy. This independent analysis, underscores the urgency of accelerating clean energy solutions.

The report highlights a critical juncture in the global energy transition. While the pace of clean technology deployment and capital investment has reached record levels, significant progress is still needed to achieve net zero emissions by mid-century. The research indicates that this goal remains achievable, but it necessitates an immediate and substantial increase in the adoption of renewable energy sources and green technologies across all sectors.

The analysis presents two main scenarios: a reference case and a net zero case. The reference case reflects a continuation of current trends, with a gradual shift towards cleaner energy sources. The net zero case, however, outlines a more ambitious pathway that achieves carbon neutrality by 2050. This scenario demands a rapid scaling-up of clean energy solutions, including:

  • Renewables Dominating Power Generation: Solar and wind power are projected to become the dominant sources of electricity generation in the net zero case. The report estimates that solar capacity alone could reach 201 gigawatts by 2050, with significant contributions from rooftop solar systems and large-scale solar projects. Wind power is also expected to experience substantial growth, with total installed capacity reaching 300 gigawatts by mid-century.
  • Electrification of Transportation: The net zero scenario emphasises the electrification of the transportation sector. This includes a significant increase in electric vehicles (EVs) on the road, alongside investments in charging infrastructure. The report acknowledges the crucial role of battery technology advancements in enabling the widespread adoption of EVs.
  • Green Hydrogen for Industry and Heavy Transport: The analysis identifies green hydrogen, produced using renewable energy sources, as a key solution for decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors like heavy industry and long-distance transportation. The report emphasises the need for further research and development efforts to bring down the cost of green hydrogen production and infrastructure.
  • Grid Modernisation to Support Renewables Integration: A significant investment in electricity grids is essential to accommodate the large-scale integration of renewable energy sources. The report underscores the need for grid modernisation projects to ensure a reliable and efficient power supply as the energy mix evolves.

The report acknowledges the challenges associated with achieving net zero by 2050. These challenges include the need for a significant increase in upfront investment, potential supply chain constraints for clean technologies, and the ongoing political and social considerations surrounding the energy transition.

However, the report also emphasises the economic benefits of a net zero pathway. The analysis suggests that a rapid transition to clean energy can create new jobs, stimulate economic growth, and enhance energy security. Additionally, achieving net zero would mitigate the worst effects of climate change, resulting in substantial environmental and health benefits.

Overall, the industry report offers a comprehensive roadmap for achieving net zero emissions by 2050. While the path is ambitious, it highlights the potential of clean energy technologies to transform the global energy landscape. The Bloomberg NEF research emphasises the need for immediate and coordinated action from governments, businesses, and individuals to accelerate the energy transition and secure a sustainable future.
